Before I Had Words

Before I Had Words

I came too soon, a quiet breath,
The world was loud, I clung to rest.
No one pushed, no one was mean,
But I stayed hidden, in between.

They tried their best, both mom and dad,
Did what they could with what they had.
Love was there, though times were tough,
Sometimes love just ain’t enough.

I played alone, made little scenes,
Built tiny worlds inside my dreams.
Didn’t cry or call for more,
Just drifted behind every door.

Before I had the words to say,
I watched the light just drift away.
A silent kid, a tender shell,
I felt too much, but couldn’t tell.

But she was there, warm hands and tea,
My grandma meant the world to me.
She saw the joy behind my eyes,
The calm that cut through all the skies.

She sang me songs, she let me be,
A world of quiet just for me.
Cookies warm and nights so wide,
I found myself by grandma’s side.

No one lied, and no one ran,
Just broken roads and no clear plan.
They did their best, they truly tried,
But in her arms, I never cried.

Before I had the words to say,
She held the fear and brushed it away.
I wasn’t lost, not in her light,
She gave me calm through every night.

Now I look back, a man grown tall,
Remember when I felt so small.
And if I ever lose my way,
Her voice still guides me through the grey.

Before I spoke, before I knew,
She showed me love that still feels true.
And though she’s gone, her warmth remains,
My favorite soul in all my veins.
