Shadows of Goodbye

“Shadows of Goodbye” is the first release from Velvet Scars, a project built around exploring how a single set of lyrics can take many different forms.

The song was inspired by a moment of loss that I experienced indirectly. My then-girlfriend learned that a close friend from her high school years had been murdered. I didn’t know the person myself, but witnessing the grief, fear, and emptiness around her and attending the funeral made a profound impact on me. The experience was starkly different from funerals for those who pass naturally — the emotions were raw, intense, and unsettling.

I wanted to translate that feeling into music, not just as a single song, but as an experiment in interpretation. How would the same lyrics sound if expressed through different musical styles and voices? How could emotion shift with perspective, tone, and instrumentation?

In Velvet Scars, each “version” of a song is performed by a distinct musical character — all created by me — exploring a unique style, atmosphere, and vocal approach. For “Shadows of Goodbye,” multiple characters interpret the lyrics, each producing a contrasting emotional reality. The words remain the same, but the sound, rhythm, and delivery transform the story in unexpected ways.

The song deals with grief, loss, and the haunting questions left behind when someone dies violently. It reflects not only on the absence of life, but on the complexity of human reactions to tragedy, and how mourning can take many forms.

This first EP is both a personal exploration and a demonstration of Velvet Scars’ central idea: that lyrics, emotion, and narrative can be fluid, evolving through voice, character, and musical style. It’s a project about curiosity, experimentation, and the ways music can convey the deepest and most difficult human emotions.

All versions of “Shadows of Goodbye” are available on Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, and other streaming platforms, giving listeners a chance to explore how a single story can become many songs.
