What Happened to Us, Marie?
On October 6, Clay Oak will release What Happened to Us, Marie?, a deeply personal song based on a real experience from the early 1990s.
I was around nineteen or twenty. It must have been sometime in 1991 or 1992.
Marie was someone I never expected to have feelings for me. In fact, when she told me that she had loved me for a long time, I honestly didn’t know how to react.
How could someone like her have wanted someone like me?
And then, somehow, we ended up together.
There was something almost unreal about it. When I was with her, the fear and uncertainty that I normally carried seemed to disappear. We listened to music, watched movies, talked, and spent time together. For a little while, nothing else seemed to matter.
But there was a problem.
Marie had previously been my friend’s fiancée.
He knew nothing about us.
I couldn’t tell him.
So I carried the secret with me everywhere I went. There was always that fear in the back of my mind that he would find out. And at the same time, another thought kept returning:
What if none of this was real?
I still don’t know exactly what I felt back then. Was it love? Or was I simply overwhelmed and grateful that someone had chosen me?
I never really got the chance to find out.
Because then, suddenly, Marie stopped answering.
I called her, but she wasn’t there.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
No final conversation.
Just silence.
One day she was there beside me. The next, she was gone.
And that was it.
I never found out why.
That’s the part of the story that has stayed with me all these years. Not because I believe there must be some dramatic explanation, but because there simply wasn’t one. There was no ending that I could understand.
Over thirty years later, I can still remember the feeling of looking at the telephone and wondering why she wasn’t answering.
What happened?
Did I misunderstand what we had?
Did something happen in her life that I knew nothing about?
Did she simply change her mind?
I don’t know.
And I don’t want to invent an explanation now just to give the story a neat ending. The song is about that uncertainty.
The music video reflects that idea as well. It moves between the present and a memory from the early 1990s, showing how someone can remain part of your memories even when you have no idea what happened to them.
What Happened to Us, Marie? is part of the Clay Oak project, where I continue exploring personal experiences, relationships and memories through songs.
The song was created using Suno as an AI music production tool. I then worked on the track with editing and adjustments in Audacity before the final master was created using Mixea. The technology is part of the production process, but the story and the experiences behind the song are mine.
What Happened to Us, Marie? will be released on October 6, 2026.
And after all these years, there is still only one question I can ask:
What happened to us, Marie?
